I went to Merit/Greenville, Tx. Wayne decided to stay in LaBelle and he has 5 ft. of water downstairs. When I talked to him yesterday morning the water was 6 inches from the downstairs door. Lost cell service for a while and when we were able to finally talk again I found out about the water rise. The good news is that he's safe and can live in the house. Everyone is in my prayers - we've (Sabine Pass) got lots of work ahead of us! Daneen LaBove

I'm in Dallas, too. Feel so isolated from everyone. Bought a laptop yesterday to catch some local news. My house is OK, no damage at all. My heart goes out to my extended family in Sabine Pass.
Love you all,

Have heard lots of rumors about Sabine Pass. Still waiting for actual news. AOL's main page has some hurricane pictures of Sabine Pass....Junior Hanson's house, Coast Guard, alligators...Wish they had more!
Ricky had to report back to Vidor plant this morning. Trinity sent in an 18-wheeler with generators and food.

as soon as anyone hears that it's possible to get into sabine w/o special authorization let me no. I am just sitting here waiting. My house is open for anyone who wants to use it, no power yet, but I'll check it again soon.

Hello! Well my home has minimal damage, need a new roof, but that is nothing compared to the rest of my family!! My two sisters have water in their homes! As well as my two uncles and other friends of mine in Bridge City who also have water in their homes! This is just unbelievable! At least they are all safe! Hope everyone else is doing well. I am staying in Tyler with my husbands sisters, but we lost power yesterday there and now I am in Palestine with my immediate family until power is back up! Talk to you all soon. Kayla White

Hi everyone! This is Cloud, and we are in Austin staying with family. From what I have heard our house in Nederland is good...barely. A huge tree limb barely missed it. I am hearing lots about Sabine...none of it very good. If there is any good news please shine a light in this dark tunnel. I have heard that all our friends are save, and that is a good start!Any word on the school? I have heard rumors, but that's about it.

Hey yall, It's Mindy Floyd. Mrs. Heid, you are in the same hotel as me, I've seen Devin, Jerry and your dogs, but not you. If I see you, prepare for the biggest hug of your life! Everything is fine at the Floyd house from what I hear. As soon as people are able to come in to Sabine, we will be there asap to help with whatever we can. Anyone else that needs anything, just call us and we are there! My heart goes out to the residents of Bridge City, Orange and most importantly, all of you that I consider my family in Sabine Pass. I love you all. Be safe and I hope to see you all soon. Tough times don't last, tough people do.

Hi, it's Scottie! Marissa and I are safe at my dad's house in Courigan, it's on the other side of Chester. Brad is with his dad and the Floyd family. We are all safe. Travis got in to Sabine yesterday and the news is all bad. My house was knocked off it's blocks. It's sitting on the ground with all it's windows out. So my home is destroyed. From what he said all the houses that were built up off the ground did good and are ok. All the rest were either destroyed or missing. He said the school building where we have our classrooms look good, that was the best news. Sabine Pass, Bridge City, and Orange were all hit hard, so please pray for us all. I love you all and I know some how we will get through this. If you don't know by now, when a disaster, whether it is a loss of life or a loss of town, our amazing little town comes together, along with our family towns around us, and we work together to succeeed in rebuilding our town and our lives!! I'm trying to stay strong and not allow myself to get down. Will write more later. My love to everyone and God Bless us all!

Hey Terri Eldridge-Thompson here. We are in Biloxi Miss. Thought we were maybe only going to be gone a few days. Thought we might as well make a trip out of it. Looks like a little longer than we thought. We will begin the search or decision about something closer to home on Thursday.
Most of you know my brother Jerry Eldridge, he took some of my fathers boats and equipment up the channel to protect. They we're only able to get as far as Taylor's Bayou. They lost my dads houseboat and Jerry's fishing boat but thankfully their all ALIVE. I know he has several other people with him. They were going to try to make it into Sabine today to access things. As soon as I hear something I will pass it along. Glad your all safe and my prayers are with you all. Just let us know when you need us to do something Mrs Heid.

P.S. Try calling Sheperds Inn in Port Acres. After Rita, they housed Evacuees. They might not be open now but maybe in the near future. My parents live next door and will be going back tomorrow. If all else fails i'll have them find out some info.

Talked to Dad (Gabby) Sunday evening, Jerry and the guys were unable to go into Sabine yesterday since the water was still at least 4ft above the dock and their down to the large push boats. Didn't want to drive over the top of anything and do more damage. Their plan was to use Jerry's smaller boat, but they no longer have that one. They will try today if water recedes enough. They have barges filled with fresh water to clean the saltwater off most of the equipment but they must get there first. It seems like lots of our staff were hit in more than one way, home and work. So sorry for all your losses. I'm thinking of you all.
Those of you that Know Gabby, just now he's chomping at the bit to return to his community to start doing what he can.

Dear Sabine Pass residents: I am writing this from Cedar Rapids, Iowa. I along with about a dozen others were in Sabine Pass working with Habit for Humanity at Mrs. Heid's mother's house. Kristie--you were gracious enough to show us around the school during our stay. Our entire congregation is praying for all your residents--for their safety and that you will soon be able to return home. From what I've seen and read, your small community has been hardhit and I agonize with you. I know this site is more for connecting your school and neighbors but I wanted to get word to you all that we are praying for you. We currently have a disaster team in our church, Hands on Disaster, that will be travelling to Texas to help with the clean-up and rebuilding process. Wonderful group of people--have been helping us in Cedar Rapids following a June flood. I asked the director to see if he could find anything out about your community. Just wanted to let you know we're thinking of you.

Hello Everyone! from Boo Boo & Pam Quibodeaux. We are at Tiffany's in North Houston! Talked with Patricia Walther She and the kids are north of Lake Charles. Her house is gone - only thing left is the pilings.
According to Gene Cox - They had a 28 foot storm surge out at the parks. All the houses are gone. Sea Rim is gone. The new office at the Federal Reserve is destroyed.
Our house is still there but the water got in. The garage moved to the back of the slab. Time to start over again. We'll be going back as soon as the water goes down enough to drive in. God Bless and take care. Boo & Pam

My mom's house is destroyed, my future trailer is gone, we lost Eric's truck, the hall where i was to be married is no longer there; Luckily my grandma's house is fine, which is a relief because i had left lots of wedding stuff because i had no room to take it with me (sigh) but my prayers are with everyone. Keep in touch guys.I hope to get closer to home soon.

My prayers continue to be with all residents of Sabine Pass.

Jerry and several of the guys were in Sabine most of the day yesterday. Jerry's home received about 5 ft of water but not structure damage like Rita, Gabby's home received about 3 feet of water, Virginia's home (very close to school) seems to be damaged the most. Only a few feet of water but looks like it's off it's blocks and walls are buckling. Further out on beach road toward Jennings Eldridge's looks like only a few inches of water in their place there. I guess they did a little better out that way.
Gabby seems to believe that possibly the large ditch that runs behind Sabine (behind Almonds place) could be clogged with debris that might be holding in water. He's planning to have that cleared as soon as possible. He is busy planning and thinking of ways to get this community back on it's feet. Thinking of you all and missing MY HOME.

Same here, nice hotel, pool, great food and it's just all hard to enjoy somehow, you just wanna go home. We're here until Thursday, not sure after that. We've tired to find things closer to home, no such luck. We have had family members in Houston who are offering, they have power and extra rooms. But also DOGS and my guys have allergies, so still no luck. I guess we'll go home and sweat. I'm sure many of you wish you could do that.

Just had to post this funny. Found out just this evening that Hwy 73 is blocked by two of the company's 250 ft. BARGES that somehow managed to find their way to Hwy 73 and are laying across the hwy covering both lanes. Highway department wanted them to remove them in four hours or they would confiscate them.
All they could say was "Congratulations you are now in the BARGE business".

I am heading back home to Orange tomorrow--hopefully for good this time. My house has power now, so my parents and I can get back and start on repairs. Please let me know if anyone needs supplies; I will do my best to get them there. Today HEB in Orange was open, but had no refrigerated or frozen food; hopefully that will change soon, now that most of north Orange and Little Cypress are having power restored. Internet access was hit and miss when I was in Orange yesterday, and it's hard to get phone calls to go through--but texting seems to be working pretty consistently, so that's probably the best way to reach me. As I said earlier, I am available to help if anybody needs me. Take care, everybody! A. Lindsey

Hi everyone,
This is Mandi Eldridge Wass. My parents, Doris & Jennings Eldridge evacuated to my house for the storm. On Monday morning we rushed my dad to the Emergency room in Brenham. He was having chest tightness and couldn't breathe. He was transferred to St. Joseph's in Bryan/College Station. They found blockage in his heart and is scheduled for a heart cath today. If they can put in Stints they will go ahead and do that today. Otherwise they will schedule a bypass. Please keep him in your prayers.
We spoke to the Ballard family yesterday and they are safe in Katy with their son.
Our thoughts and prayers are with everyone effected by Ike.
God Bless!

Jerry and some crew have gotten the boats down into Sabine and are able to travel around checking on things. If you haven't heard any news about your place or have questions about someone else's home let me know and I'll ask him to go by. I'm sure a lot of people have been in contact with him and it sounds like most have been able to get in to check things out.

Kay, I'm so sorry about your families homes, glad your safe at the lake. Teller family sorry to hear that you had losses again. I think most will be forced to build higher this time. I know Jerry is considering that this time himself.
And Dad is considering a modular home for now.

Hey everyone it's Melissa Adair. I've been looking at the SP devastation online. My heart goes out to you all. I've spoken to Kristi a couple of times and offered my home to anyone in need. The offer still stands. My home is yours if you need it. I know how expensive evacuations can be... I love you all. Please let me know if there is ANYTHING we can do to help! My family, except those from Bridge city and Orange, came out okay. Lots of love!

Hey Sabine Pass gang--Sandra Erickson here. We're fine--my kids and I are located at a nice hotel in Grapevine. My husband, Cary, had to stay home because he is on the Jefferson County Emergency Management Team. According to him, our home received minimal damages--some siding damage, fence down etc. My stepson, Josh, didn't fare as well. He just bought a home in Bridge City and moved in 2 weeks ago. He received 4 feet of water in his house and doesn't believe that his flood insurance was even in effect yet. Also my mom's cabin at Crystal Beach was a total loss with only a slab left. She had just finished remodeling the entire cabin and had barely gotten to enjoy it. We have been very depressed because this is where we have spent summer holidays and vacations for the past 22 years. I was heartsick to hear about the devastation at Sabine Pass. My thoughts and prayers are with each of you. Let me know what we can do and when we can do it. Love,
Sandra E.

I have power at my place in Orange. I f anyone wants to set up camp closer to their place they are welcome. I'm hearing positive things on Sabine Pass, a lot of work, but I think we have a lot of people ready to do it. Take care everyone. Thinking about you.

Hello everyone, we are still good. Went to Bridge City yesterday and all I can say is our prays are unending for everyone. We are planning to go to Sabine Pass tomorrow (Friday) to look at all my family's homes and pick up what is left to come back to camp and wash and set up storage. I'm hoping I can see some of your faces that I love and miss so much. We have a emty lot here if anyone needs to store a boat etc., we put our cars on it for protection through the winds and they did fine. We have washer/dryer large bathroom if you need. We are 5 miles from a Brookshire Bros. There is a fishermans motel here with rooms for $35.00 a night if you need to get closer for a while or you could sleep on an air mattress with us. We are all good and healthy and saying prayers daily.
Justin's house is fine in Groves. Waiting on electricity only. His dog was bitten by a snake when they were in Sabine, but she is doing wonderful now. It is great to see all of your blogs, keep them coming as it feels great to hear from you all. LOL, prays and XOXOXO to you all. Nurse Kay

I finally have electricity in Houston. No damage to my apartment. I'm back to work (and making an attempt to be back to normal.) I'll be in Sabine for cleanup as soon as I can be, and as soon as Mom and Dad are ready to move forward with their stuff. If there's any way I can help anyone from here, don't hesitate to ask!

Mandi, please keep us updated on your dad! And give him our love.

Jennings Eldridge came through the Bypass OK today. All went well and he is in recovery now. It ended up being a Quad. Good thing he was up there with the girls and not down here. It was a good time to take care of this issue. Just like Gabby he was edger to get down to Sabine and get busy fixing things.

I think we are heading home tomorrow, power or not, can't really enjoy it here anyway. I want to be home with power so Dad can come stay close by and get into Sabine everyday to do what he needs to. It's driving him crazy being away, but with his pacemaker he must be where power is so that he can be monitored by phone at night.

I hear that the inside of the school looks like is was when we left, I'm glad.

Thinking of you all, Terri Thompson

Hey Sabine Pass!
Greetings from the Albright family! We are in Johnson City, about 30 miles south of Austin and right now my parents are on Pleasure Island assessing the damage done to our house(this is Kaitlin's older sister Kristen, btw). So far, it appears that a sea/land container combined with the water from the lake took out most of our garage and sent water up to the middle part of the deck. It reached the ceiling in the garage, so there is some damage to the subflooring inside our house. A heat vent blew off on one side of the roof so there is a minor hole in the corner of the living room. We have a boxcar (!!!) at the edge of our property and the water from the lake still hasn't receded all the way back to the lake yet. There is still a bit more in the yard. Also, our electricity pole in front of our house looks like a pretzel, so we have to wait for that to be fixed too.
The damage to our house is inconsequential to the fact that we were able to get out in time (we almost got stuck on the island!) and that we are together as a family now. Our prayers are with the residents of Sabine Pass and holler if you need anything!

There will be a Site-Based Meeting in the Teaching Theater on Tuesday the 23rd at 1pm. All members should try and attend if possible. We will be discussing return dates for the staff and students. Looks like we should be back sooner than we were with Rita. The main school looks great, a/c already on and the generator is going strong. There should be water restored this weekend.

Hi Everyone!
We've been in and out of Sabine Pass everyday since the hurricane. The people are cleaning up around the school very fast. My two older sons Tray and Richard have now become Alligator wrestlers! They got one at the girls locker room yesterday. Gene had to kill one at the softball complex two days ago. He's been told to kill any on site that pose a threat to workers or citizens. He hated to do that because he usually catches them and releases them at the marsh at Sea Rim. He took me Wednesday to see our house. I had a good cry. It just wasn't the same as the pictures he showed me. He had to kill three more alligators at our house, 10ft,9ft,and a 7ft. He had tears in his eyes after he did this. He called dish network to cancel our services and they want our cable box's back!!!! He told them they were in the Marsh under water. Well wednesday he walked over something in the water and found two cable box's!!! Needless to say, he WILL be senting them back to Dish Network mud and all!!! I'll get Richard to send pictures of our house and Sea Rim later. By the way we are having Church services behind the Methodist church sunday at 9am, so everyone is invited!!!

Love to all,
We're praying for EVERYONE!!!

Went to our camp in Colmesneil to meet up with our daughters (and whoever they felt like inviting) on Thurs., then we traveled to Palestine where we stayed with my sister until Monday. Yes, Ike's eye passed directly over us, but it was no big deal. At least I had Internet while I was there.

Lane had to return to Motiva on Monday, so I brought him back to Groves and cleaned out my fridge and checked out the damage. Our damage is minor compared to the flooding damage of Lane's parent's and brother's houses in Bridge City.

Lane is busy at Motiva trying to get us Shell gasoline flowing again. Wish him luck! He and his folks are working 16 - 18 hour days.

After I dropped Lane off, I went to Chester to a campground Monday through Wednesday.

My daughters went to their respective apartments when they got electricity in Beaumont on Tuesday.

I came home Thursday. We got power this morning(Saturday) and cable sometime this afternoon. YEA!!! :)

Visit to Sabine Pass
Andrew and I visited SP today. It's obvious that a massive flood plus a strong wind hit the area. Some of the debris is strangely up high in the grasses- I guess it's from the surge being so high. There is a strong fish-like stench in some areas, but not in others. (I've been told it's the same in Bridge City.)

There is no post office trailer any longer. I noticed the post-office boxes laying in the ditches by the side of the road. There is black mud everywhere!

Due to the mud, some of the water has not receded, so some streets are still flooded.

Ike's Gifts to Sabine Pass
Ike shared a couple of "fun" gifts with Sabine Pass. We got a huge cool crumpled tank in the front lawn of the school.

I was cautioned that there are still snakes moving around, so I didn't really try to get out of the van much. Imagine! :)

I also was cautioned about downed power lines. And there were many.

Lastly, I didn't need to be cautioned about gators - because as I was driving down 87, I saw a log walking across the road. Okay, it was a gator, but I was driving slowly, and "he" was being very still at the time. I stopped, snapped a picture of the diva, and allowed him to move on across the highway.

The State of Sabine Pass
Mr. Nash has a huge tree in the middle of his house! The Heids' (Kristi and Jerry's) home has once again been virtually destroyed, not only by wind, but by water this time. Mrs. Heids' sister's home was condemned. She was not even able to get anything out of her home - it was too unstable for her to enter it.

I heard that initially Mrs. Seymour thought her home was okay, but now she is having some problems with the dirt under her home eroding due to the water, which may have caused her floor to buckle.

Most homes are heavily damaged, if not totally destroyed. The only homes that look practically untouched are the stilt homes. Someone said there are 10 good structures standing.

Daycare called today - they start back on Monday, so I will now be available to help out since Andrew will be going to his preschool.

My husband's brother in Bridge City got about 2 feet of water in his house and my in-laws just off Cow Bayou in Bridge City got about 4 1/2 feet of water in their house.

Mike Dolan checking in again. We made one trip to Sabine and the only thing my house needs is a bulldozer. I found my blue container box in the school driveway. Hello everyone. Report live AND WITH ELECTRICITY from Nederland. I've made a couple of trips to Sabine Pass and it just breaks my heart to see all the devastation. Rita was bad, but Ike was worse!
We will try to start setting up the distribution center tomorrow (Monday). There were workers at school yesterday getting the shop area cleaned out and ready for the supplies that will be coming in shortly. All help is appreciated. If you plan to come, please bring boots and gloves to wear. There is still a lot of mud everywhere. I've only seen one alligator and have not seen any snakes. But, I know that they're there. Ice and water are being delivered, but you might want to bring your own ice chest and drinks. The Salvation Army is delivering lunch, not sure about supper.

Hello to all. Just wanted to pass on some information.
All faculty and staff are asked to return to work on Thursday, September 25. Hours will be from 9:00 - 3:00.
Students are TENTATIVELY scheduled to return to school on October 6 at the regular time.
The Health Department will be at school on Thursday, September 25, to administer shots (tetanus, hepatitis A, and something else). Shots will be given to the cleaning crews at the shop starting at 3:00. They will then move to the school cafeteria to administer shots to employees and residents, starting at 4:00, prior to the Town Meeting in the Teaching Theater at 5:00.

Sabine Pass Forum said...

So the conditions are so bad that we have to have shots to go back to work?

I won't be back Thursday, but I will try to be in on Friday.

Sabine Pass Forum said...

The school is perfectly safe...in fact the main building is in the same shape that we left it in prior to Hurricane Ike. The shots are being offered to residents who are working at their home sites. It is not necessary for employees to take the shots, however they are there if you are interested in them. They will ALSO be offering FLU shots....this as well is not mandatory. THANKS!!!!!!

Made a trip to Sabine Pass today with mom and dad to see Uncle Tommy and Aunt Glenda. The good news is they got electricity while we were there. That is about where the good news ends. It was just tramatic to see the town I grew up in and still love dearly in my heart so destroyed. We went and saw Lee's house (the house dad grew up in with Uncle Tommy and Aunt Betty Jo)and dad was just devastated to see his childhood home destroyed like that. All of the people of Sabine Pass are in our prayers. I know that the strong people of Shark Country will survive and come back bigger and better. Just know that this member of the '86 class will never forget anyone down in Sabine Pass. May God continue to hold of you up and see you through this trial in life.

atersigies said...

Yes Vicki it's very sad indeed. I know my father (Gabby Eldridge) is facing the tough decision of demolishing the family home. He refused to take it down after Rita and had just recently finished the repairs. I'm sure most of the people in the community feel the same way about their original homes. My heart goes out to your family.
